The Vicksburg Civil War Museum: Preserving History, Inspiring the Future

Nestled in the heart of downtown Vicksburg, the Vicksburg Civil War Museum offers more than a collection of relics. It tells a story of resilience, inclusivity, and vision. Led by owner Charles Pendleton, the museum shines as a timeless jewel along Washington Street, inviting visitors from near and far to step into the past.

A Visionary Curator

Charles Pendleton, a Vicksburg native, is the first African American to own a Civil War museum. His deep connection to the city’s history fuels his mission: to preserve rare artifacts, highlight untold stories, and create a space where history inspires all who enter. Pendleton’s dedication has led him to uncover hidden relics that bring the 19th-century South vividly to life.

Immersive Tours & Inclusive Stories

Under Pendleton’s guidance, museum tours offer a captivating journey into the Civil War era. Through interactive displays and immersive storytelling, visitors explore the diverse experiences of those who lived during one of America’s most defining chapters.

A hallmark of the museum is its emphasis on African American history during the Civil War. By spotlighting the bravery of Black soldiers, freedmen, and abolitionists, Pendleton ensures their contributions are remembered and honored. His approach redefines how we engage with history, creating a fuller, more inclusive narrative.

Pendleton’s philosophy is simple yet powerful:

“Our goal is not to educate you but to inspire you to become more educated.”

Every exhibit, every artifact, and every story shared within the museum serves as a call to action, to seek knowledge, to honor those who came before us, and to carry their legacy forward.
