The Dr. McAllister Foundation will host the Vicksburg premiere of the documentary, “My Mind To Me Is a Kingdom: The Legacy of Dr. Jane Ellen McAllister,” which won Best Feature Documentary at the Fifth Annual Jackson Film Festival and Best Feature Documentary and the Mary E. Mills Social Justice Imact Award from the Tennessee International Independent Film Festival both in 2025. It has also received a Special Achievement Award from the Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters The documentary highlights the life and contributions of Dr. Jane Ellen McAllister, a pioneering educator who became the first Black woman to earn a Ph.D. in Education in the United States. Her work helped reshape teacher training throughout the South, and her former home in Vicksburg is being preserved as a future cultural and educational center. A reception and awards ceremony will follow the screening. Michael Morris, Executive Director of the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum be the honorary Chair. Dr. Bill Ferris and Dr. Bettye Gardner will present awards to various supporters and donors, and filmmaker, David Rae Morris will be attending along with one of Dr. McAllister's former students from Jackson State University: Dr. Doris Ginn.The foundation is raising funds to support renovation efforts for the historic property.Tickets for the screening will be available in advance at Highway 61 Coffeehouse and online (see ticket link). They will also be available at the door.General Admission for one is $30. A group ticket for two is $55.
