Original Downtown Roots: Merle Norman – Belle Rose Salon & Spa

In August 2016, Downtown Vicksburg welcomed back a familiar name in beauty and skincare: Merle Norman Cosmetics and Belle Rose Salon &  Spa. After decades away from Washington Street, Vicksburg’s very first Merle Norman studio returned to its roots with a brand-new home at 1221 Washington Street, inside the beautifully renovated Belle Rose Building.

Owner Sharon Rose Robinson has been at the helm of Vicksburg’s Merle Norman for years, and she knew it was time to bring the business back where it all began. “I’m just taking her home,” Robinson had said of the relocation from South Frontage Road. With the support of her then fiancé, Dan Robinson, who purchased the historic building and oversaw five weeks of renovations. 

Why Downtown?

Some questioned the move, saying Merle Norman belonged in strip centers or malls. But Robinson trusted her instincts and her town. “I know my town. I know what downtown is,” she said. “I am going to be in the center of more than 37 different businesses, museums, restaurants, boutiques, and art galleries. I’m within a three-block walking distance of all of them, and I’m in the center of it.”

Merle Norman headquarters soon gave its blessing, and Robinson set out to create a space that blended history, beauty, and community.

A Building with Character

The home for Merle Norman and Belle Rose Salon & Spa carries its own story. Once the First Federal Savings building at the corner of Washington and Clay Streets, the property had already seen extensive renovations, including a fireplace and redone ceilings, before Robinson and his team personalized it for its new role.

They added in shelving for the cosmetics studio, new chairs and shampoo stations for the salon, sinks for treatment rooms, fresh flooring, updated lighting, and even a creative re-entry into the old bank vault.

All-in-One Beauty Destination

The combination studio, salon, and spa offers a wide range of services: professional stylists, estheticians, a massage therapist, makeup artists, nail technician, and a boutique where you can shop trendy clothing, accessories, and more. It’s a one-stop destination where clients can find everything they need, whether it’s a refreshed skincare routine, a new haircut, or full event-ready glam.

Founded in 1931, Merle Norman Cosmetics has always been about helping women discover their best selves. Pairing that legacy with a full-service salon, spa & boutique ensures that every client who walks through the door has the opportunity to leave feeling renewed, confident, and beautiful.

Robinson saw the move as more than a business decision. It was about strengthening the community. “Merle has an established clientele, so we’re bringing all those people to the downtown area,” she said. “But I hope to help other businesses too.”
