Walnut Hills: A Southern Dining Tradition in the Heart of Vicksburg

In Olde Town Vicksburg, on 1214 Adams Street, stands a handsome 19th-century home with a wide porch, shuttered windows, and the kind of Southern charm that stops you in your tracks. This is Walnut Hills, a restaurant that has been serving “World-Famous Southern Plantation Cuisine” since 1980.

A Home with History

Built in 1880 by the Rogers family, the house still carries the warmth and presence of its origins. Its name is tied to the land itself; centuries before Vicksburg existed, the Spanish named the area Nogales, after the walnut trees that grew along the bluffs.

When Joyce Clingan opened Walnut Hills, she envisioned a round table restaurant reminiscent of old-time boarding houses, places where strangers gathered as friends around communal tables. That spirit still lives on today, even as the restaurant continues to evolve with renovations like a new kitchen and a chef for evening meals.

The Legacy of Miss Herdcine

No mention of Walnut Hills would be complete without celebrating the late Miss Herdcine Williams, the heart of the kitchen. For more than 30 years, she had been serving what many call the best fried chicken in the world. Her cayenne-laced recipe has earned recognition from Mississippi Magazine, Delta Magazine, and even a spot on Good Morning America.

Herdcine followed in the footsteps of her mother, the late Ms. Alma Robinson, who made salads and slaw daily until retiring at 70. Today, her son Xavier continues the family legacy, marking three generations of the Williams family's contributions to Walnut Hills.

Award-Winning Southern Favorites

The accolades speak for themselves:

  • Best Fried Chicken – Mississippi Magazine (2019, 2021, 2022)

  • Best Dessert: Pecan Praline Pie – Mississippi Magazine (2021)

  • Top 10 Restaurants in Mississippi – CultureTrip & DeepSouthUSA

  • Certificate of Excellence – TripAdvisor

And those are just a few. From cakes, pies, and casseroles to the legendary fried chicken and biscuits, Walnut Hills has earned its place as one of the South’s must-visit eateries.

Tradition, With a Side of Hospitality

Despite remodels and updates, the details that make Walnut Hills special remain the same: mismatched rockers on the front porch, bottles of homemade hot pepper sauce, and a menu that feels like a community cookbook passed down through generations.
