A Downtown Delight: Main Street Market Cafe
Main Street Market Café: A Taste of Vicksburg Hospitality
Tucked into the heart of Vicksburg’s oldest neighborhood, Main Street Market Café isn’t just a restaurant; it’s part of the town’s living history. From the moment you walk up and see the zinnias blooming in summer and are greeted by “JoJo, the little chef mascot,” you know you’re about to enjoy something special.
Meet Sally & Chris
Behind the café is the husband-and-wife duo Sally and Chris, who have been in the restaurant business for more than 25 years. Sally, born and raised in Vicksburg, brings warmth and hospitality to every guest. Her mother, Betty, a true historian, helped start the business with Chris before Sally joined in. Chris, who grew up in New Orleans with seafood at his fingertips, is the talent in the kitchen. Together, they’ve created a space where locals and visitors alike feel at home.
Both Sally and Chris come from big families, so they know what it means to share a table full of fresh, honest food. Chris has a gift for soups, turning just about anything into something rich and comforting. His chicken and andouille gumbo is a staple, while his white beans and rice have converted even the most reluctant eaters. And of course, Betty’s biscuits are legendary, rolled out fresh every day and celebrated in family lore with a poem hung in their childhood home.
Fresh, Seasonal & Legendary
At Main Street Market Café, the menu changes weekly to reflect seasonal and local offerings, keeping things fresh and exciting. Diners can always expect house-made quiches, soups, pies, and specials, alongside iconic dishes like the Muffuletta with New Orleans olive salad. The housemade ginger dressing is another fan favorite. And don’t forget dessert, pies like Chocolate Chunky Pecan and Lemon Chess are just a few that regulars rave about.
The café is open Monday–Friday from 11 AM to 2 PM. Private dining is available Tuesday–Saturday, and the third Saturday of every month brings the exclusive Supper Club (tickets sell out fast!). Their daily menu is updated online so you can always see what’s cooking before you stop in.
Rooted in History
Set in a structure that dates back to 1840, the café sits surrounded by history: across the street is the George Washington Ball House, and nearby are landmarks like the Old Courthouse Museum, Anchuca, Christ Episcopal Church, and The Duff Green Mansion. Just a short walk from the Vicksburg National Military Park, it’s the perfect spot to start or end a day of exploring in downtown Vicksburg.
Sally says it best: “Growing up in Vicksburg, history is what you have; it’s your roots, where you come from, and who you belong to. Southerners hold on to their history, but want to share it with all who will listen.” That same spirit flows through every meal and every welcome at Main Street Market Café.
So whether you’re a local craving Betty’s biscuits or a visitor wandering downtown, Main Street Market Café is ready to greet you with food, stories, and a true taste of Vicksburg.
