Catfish Row Museum receives award for Development Project at the Annual MS Main Street Award Ceremony
On Thursday, June 20th, 2024, Linda Fondren accepted the "Outstanding New Development Project" Award on behalf of the Catfish Row Museums "Cooking up Connections" series. This award is granted to an individual or business that has undertaken and completed a new development project within a downtown district.
Winner: Cooking Up Connections at Catfish Row
In Spring 2023, the Catfish Row Museum began constructing a 1,500-square-foot demonstration teaching kitchen to enhance the visitor experience. This kitchen aims to offer classes on good nutrition and programs on the area's culinary heritage, allowing visitors to engage with and learn about the diverse foodways culture of Vicksburg and the Mississippi Delta. By May 2023, the teaching kitchen was complete and ready for cooking demonstrations by food authors and chefs from different parts of the state. This addition gives visitors a taste of the Mississippi Delta's foodways and the Mississippi River, contributing to a culinary tourism pathway and expanding economic opportunities in Vicksburg.
The $335,000 investment in the Catfish Row Museum is seen as an extension of the museum’s mission to teach the community and visitors about the multiple cultures that have made Vicksburg what it is. The Catfish Row Museum Demonstration Kitchen has transformed this attraction into a culinary exploration, education, and cultural appreciation hub. It is now well-positioned to attract visitors, engage the community, and deepen understanding of the Delta's culinary heritage and the importance of good nutrition.
